History of Twilight

Twilight got it start as a result of a dream of a stay-at-home mother of 3 small children. On the morning of June 2, 2003, Stephenie Meyer had a dream which had a huge impact on her.  Although she continued on her day taking care of her responsibilities as a mother of 3, she found the characters of her dream to be so realistic that she just could not stop thinking about the story on her dream.

Stephenie Meyer devoted the next 3 months writing what would eventually become the first Twilight novel on her computer. She was able to do this late at night, while her children were asleep. She had not anticipated using her degree in English Literature from Brigham Young University in ways that would result in one of the most popular novel series of all time.

The first of the twilight books was released in 2005 and quickly became one of the best sellers for the year. The book received rave reviews, including being crowned as one of the “Top 10 books for Young Adults” from ALA, and the “Best Book of the Year” from Publisher’s Weekly. This book would become the basis for the Twilight movie, which was released in late 2008. Among the many achievements from the film was the breakout cast of Twilight, spearheaded by Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart.

The follow-up to the original Twilight book was the popular New Moon novel. New Moon rocketed up to the number one slot on the New York Times’ Best Selling novels. New Moon remained at this top position for a total of 31 weeks. The additional books in the Twilight saga were also wildly popular. Most notably, Eclipse, which sold over 150K copies on the first day of being released. The Eclipse release also claimed the #1 spot on The Wall Street Journals’ top 10 list, as well as the top position for USA Today.

Lastly, the fourth and final book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, was released in August of 2008. Among this book’s achievements is the record breaking number of copies that were printed in order to keep up with demand. Much like its Twilight predecessors, Breaking Dawn found itself at the number one position on many of the nation’s lists. Clearly Stephenie Meyer’s dream has sparked a sensation that has many of us living her dream she had on a seemingly normal day in Arizona.
